Wild Rover

from At Home by Patrick Rose

/

about

I bought a book called "Folk Songs of Australia and the men and women who sing them" by John Meredith and Hugh Anderson when I was on my honeymoon and I've really enjoyed learning random songs from it.

This was collected from Edwin Goodwin by Meredith, and includes the great line above "Possibly the best of the several versions of 'Wild Rover' given in this book was sung by Goodwin. Its distinction comes from an unusual tune in the Aeolian mode.'

When collected, it only had a single verse and chorus which is what I sing here.

lyrics

I've been a wild rover for many long years,
And I've spent all my money in whisky and beer,
But the time now is a approaching, I must take care,
For fear that misfortune should fall to my share.

Wild roving, bold roving
Wild roving give o'er,
For I ne'er shall be
A wild rover no more
